Al Green's 1973 soul masterpiece Call Me as a 50th anniversary indie exclusive on coloured vinyl, cut from the original master tapes.
This 50th anniversary indie exclusive is on coloured vinyl, with lacquers cut from the original master tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound. Call Me made the Billboard Top 10, became Green's third No. 1 soul album and gave him three Top 10 pop singles.
Al Green made it sound easy, which is the hardest trick in soul music. By 1973 he and producer Willie Mitchell had the Hi Records sound down to a fine art in Memphis: Al Jackson Jr. and Howard Grimes on drums, the Hodges brothers on guitar, organ and bass, Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love on horns, the Memphis Strings, and Green's voice gliding somewhere between a whisper and a shout.
"Call Me (Come Back Home)," "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" and "You Ought to Be with Me" are as smooth as Memphis soul gets. Then he turns towards country, covering Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away," and closes with the gospel of "Jesus Is Waiting," a glimpse of where his life was heading. Mitchell's production keeps everything warm and close, with the drums low and dry and the strings never more than a gentle cushion.
Rolling Stone placed it among the 500 greatest albums of all time, and VH1 named it the 70th greatest album in any genre. Plenty of records claim to be the perfect late-night album; this one simply gets on with it.
