About the album

Given total creative freedom at Stax's Enterprise label, Isaac Hayes recorded with the Bar-Kays and built just four long tracks from deep grooves, sweeping strings, fuzz guitar and his rich, commanding baritone.

His twelve-minute take on Bacharach and David's "Walk On By" is a slow-burning masterpiece, "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" is funky and fun, and the epic "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" opens with a famous spoken-word rap. Hugely influential and endlessly sampled.
