Sam Cooke's electrifying Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963, a sweaty Miami club show: "Bring It On Home to Me," "Chain Gang," "Cupid" and "Twistin' the Night Away."
Live at the Harlem Square Club is one of the greatest live soul albums ever, showing the raw, gospel-fired side of Sam Cooke that his smooth pop hits only hinted at.
Recorded on January 12, 1963, in Miami with King Curtis's band, this fiery show was shelved for over two decades because it was considered too rough for Cooke's polished image, finally seeing the light of day in 1985.
Cooke works the crowd into a frenzy, turning "Bring It On Home to Me" into a call-and-response revival, roughing up "Chain Gang" and "Cupid," and closing with a joyous "Having a Party."
Shelved for being too rough, which turned out to be the whole charm. Polish was left at the door, thankfully.
