The Virgin Suicides soundtrack, Sofia Coppola's dreamy 1970s mixtape: Air's "Playground Love," Todd Rundgren, Heart, The Hollies, Al Green, 10cc and Canada's own Sloan.
Sofia Coppola built one of the great movie mixtapes for her debut, pairing hazy 70s AM gold with Air's otherworldly "Playground Love."
Some soundtracks just get the mood exactly right. For her 1999 debut film, Sofia Coppola wanted the feeling of being a teenager in the suburbs in 1975, so she raided the era's radio for songs that sound like sunlight through bedroom curtains.
Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me," Heart's "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man," The Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" and 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" sit alongside Al Green's "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" and Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)." Halifax's Sloan sneaks in with "Everything You've Done Wrong," and Air's "Playground Love" floats over it all.
Coppola said the 70s songs somehow sounded modern next to Air, and she was right. It's a warm, wistful listen from start to finish, and a perfect gateway to her later soundtracks.
