The Beatles' 1964 album Beatles for Sale in stereo, with "Eight Days a Week," "No Reply" and "I'm a Loser."
Beatles for Sale catches the band between Beatlemania and Rubber Soul, folkier and more reflective, with "Eight Days a Week" up front.
By late 1964 the Beatles had conquered the world and were, frankly, a bit knackered. You can hear it in the best way on Beatles for Sale, where the endless grin of the early records gives way to something moodier and more grown up.
John's "No Reply," "I'm a Loser" and "Baby's in Black" open the album with real heartache, "Eight Days a Week" fades in like nothing they'd done before, and country and rockabilly covers of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins show where their roots lay. In the studio they played with feedback, timpani and African hand drums.
Most North American fans first heard these songs scattered across Beatles '65 and Beatles VI; this is the album as the band intended, in stereo. It's the bridge from "She Loves You" to Rubber Soul, and it's a lovely place to stand.
