The Beach Boys' gorgeous, wistful 1971 album Surf's Up, featuring Brian Wilson's rescued Smile masterpiece "Surf's Up" and "'Til I Die."
Surf's Up was the Beach Boys' highest-charting album of new music in the US since 1967, a lush, thoughtful record with two of Brian Wilson's most beautiful songs.
The title is a knowing wink: by 1971 the Beach Boys had left surf music far behind, and the cover painting of a slumped rider makes the joke clear. Inside, the band made one of their most reflective, grown-up albums, with Carl Wilson stepping up and the whole group writing.
"Long Promised Road" and "Feel Flows" are Carl's lovely, psychedelic gems, "Disney Girls (1957)" is Bruce Johnston's sweet nostalgia, "'Til I Die" is Brian Wilson's quietly devastating meditation, and the title track, a long-shelved piece from the legendary Smile sessions, finally saw daylight.
It reached No. 29 in the US and No. 15 in the UK and won strong reviews. For anyone who loves Pet Sounds and wants to go deeper, Surf's Up is essential.
