AC/DC's 1980 comeback and one of the best-selling albums ever made: "Hells Bells," "Shoot to Thrill," "You Shook Me All Night Long" and the title track.
Back in Black is one of the best-selling albums of all time and the best-selling hard-rock record ever. It was Brian Johnson's first album with the band, made just months after they lost Bon Scott, and every song on side two is a classic.
It should have been the end. In February of 1980, AC/DC were riding high on Highway to Hell when they lost their singer Bon Scott, and the Young brothers seriously considered packing it in. Instead they recruited Brian Johnson, a Geordie with a voice like a gravel truck, flew to the Bahamas with producer Mutt Lange and, in seven weeks, made one of the best-selling albums in the history of recorded music.
The all-black cover was a tribute to Scott, and the music is a celebration: "Hells Bells" tolls you in, "Shoot to Thrill" and "Back in Black" hit like freight trains, and "You Shook Me All Night Long" became the unofficial anthem of every bar band on Earth. Angus and Malcolm's riffs are so lean and mean they've never been bettered. If you only own one hard-rock record, make it this one.
