The Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1967 debut, one of the greatest debuts in rock history: "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Foxy Lady." On Legacy.
Are You Experienced is one of the most influential albums ever made, the record that rewrote the rules of electric guitar. This Legacy pressing collects the US edition's classics: "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe", "Fire", "Foxy Lady" and "The Wind Cries Mary."
Jimi Hendrix had spent years as a hired gun on the R&B circuit, backing the Isley Brothers and Little Richard, before Chas Chandler of the Animals brought him to London in 1966 and built a band around him. Within months, the Jimi Hendrix Experience (with Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums) had London's guitar gods (Clapton, Beck, Townshend) in a state of awe, and Are You Experienced was the proof.
Nobody had heard a guitar do these things: the squalling feedback of "Purple Haze," the funk swagger of "Fire" and "Foxy Lady," the tender poetry of "The Wind Cries Mary," the backwards-tape swirl of the title track. It's psychedelic, bluesy, sexy and wildly inventive, and almost 60 years later it still sounds like the future arriving all at once.
