Pink Floyd's 1975 classic, home to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and the title track, on yellow flame vinyl for its 50th anniversary.
This 50th anniversary pressing comes on yellow flame vinyl, a nod to the famous burning-man cover. Wish You Were Here topped the charts in the U.K. and the U.S., has sold an estimated 13 million copies and sits on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums list.
Following up The Dark Side of the Moon was always going to be a tall order, so Pink Floyd did the sensible thing and made a record about how strange it felt to be Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here, recorded at EMI Studios through 1975, is a record about absence: the absence of their old friend and founder Syd Barrett, who famously wandered into the studio during the sessions, and the emptiness of the music business machine that had swallowed them whole.
The nine-part "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" bookends the album, "Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar" (with Roy Harper on lead vocals) skewer the industry, and the title track is just about the most beautiful thing they ever recorded. Half a century on, it still sounds like a band at the peak of its powers, and this yellow flame pressing makes for a very handsome way to celebrate the birthday.
