National Album Day 2026 brings Meddle back on limited San Tropez orange marble vinyl. The album reached No. 3 in the UK. "Echoes" takes up all 23 minutes of side two.
Meddle began with nothing. In early 1971 the band tried a series of experiments they called "Nothings," each member recording alone without hearing the others, and from those fragments grew "Echoes." Its opening ping is Richard Wright striking a single piano note through a Leslie speaker; it sounded so much like sonar, and proved so hard to recreate, that the demo take stayed on the record.
The LP stands between the Syd Barrett years and the Roger Waters era. The wind that carries "One Of These Days" into "A Pillow Of Winds" hints at the linked tracks of Wish You Were Here, "Fearless" closes with Liverpool fans singing at Anfield, and Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis wrapped it all in his underwater-ear cover.
"I think Meddle is a much better album than its cover."
Storm Thorgerson, cover designer
