About the album

The title comes from Sybil, a TV film about a woman who could only feel safe in her therapist's big chair, which tells you Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith still had their heads in the deep stuff. What changed after The Hurting was the sound: glossy, guitar-driven and built for the radio.

"Shout" is a primal, pounding call to arms, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" glides along on one of the great shuffles in pop, and "Head over Heels" is a swooning, romantic sweep. "Mothers Talk," "The Working Hour" and a re-recorded "I Believe" show the band's jazzier, more ambitious side.

It peaked at No. 2 in the UK and sold by the millions.
