Shakira's 1998 breakthrough Dónde Están los Ladrones? in a 25th anniversary edition: "Ciega, Sordomuda," "Ojos Así," "Inevitable" and "Tú."
This 25th anniversary edition puts Shakira's fourth album on heavyweight vinyl in a gatefold jacket. It sold over a million copies in its first month, topped Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart and landed on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
After Pies Descalzos made her a star across Latin America, Shakira knew people would be waiting to pounce on the follow-up, whichever way she went. Her answer was to be herself, louder. She moved to Miami, teamed up with Emilio Estefan as manager and executive producer, and kept final say over every song and arrangement, demoing each one two or three times until, in her words, it made her hair stand on end.
The result is Latin rock with pop hooks and a streak of Middle Eastern melody, worked up at Estefan's Crescent Moon Studios with Luis Fernando Ochoa, Lester Mendez, Pablo Flores and others. "Ciega, Sordomuda" is a brassy, breathless opener and was the lead single, "Inevitable" and "No Creo" bring the guitars, "Tú" is a big, tender ballad, and "Ojos Así" leans into her Lebanese heritage with a Middle Eastern melody.
It went platinum in the U.S., triple platinum in Colombia, and led to her MTV Unplugged a year later. The title translates as "Where Are the Thieves?"; judging by the sales, they were all out buying this.
