About the album

A Tom Berenger film about missionaries in the Amazon is not where most metal albums begin. But At Play in the Fields of the Lord set Max Cavalera thinking, and a year later Sepultura, producer Ross Robinson and a small party were in Mato Grosso recording with the Xavante people, whose chant on "Itsári" threads through the whole record.

Brazilian percussion legend Carlinhos Brown arranged the drum ensembles that make "Roots Bloody Roots" and "Ratamahatta" hit like a landslide, Igor Cavalera's drumming leads the charge, and the riffs nod to the nu metal of Korn, whose first two albums Robinson had produced. "Lookaway" brings in Jonathan Davis, David Silveria, DJ Lethal and Mike Patton, and "Attitude" and "Born Stubborn" are pure pit fuel.

The bonus disc is a proper look behind the scenes, from early demos to instrumental rough mixes of "Attitude," "Cutthroat" and "Dictatorshit." Roots is also the moment Brazil's biggest metal band went home to find a new sound, which beats sending a postcard.
