About the album

By 1991 Metallica had made four thrash records that redefined heavy music, and they were tired of nine-minute epics. So they hired Bob Rock, the Vancouver producer known for big, polished hard-rock records, and spent eight often-tense months in Los Angeles making something slower, heavier and more direct. Fans were nervous. They needn't have been.

"Enter Sandman" is the riff that launched a million guitar lessons, "Sad but True" hits like a landslide, "The Unforgiven" and "Wherever I May Roam" stretch out into something grander, and "Nothing Else Matters" proved James Hetfield could write a ballad that even non-metal fans would sing at weddings. The Black Album went on to sell like nothing else in metal history, and this remastered 2LP makes it sound as huge as it should.
