Linkin Park's 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, is one of the best-selling debut albums since Guns N' Roses' Appetite For Destruction came along in 1987.
Hybrid Theory has sold more than 32 million copies worldwide and won the band a Grammy for "Crawling." All four singles ("One Step Closer," "In the End," "Crawling" and "Papercut") are still among the biggest songs they ever made, with Don Gilmore in the producer's chair.
Linkin Park's first album had a tangled and torturous gestation period, but all that work was not for naught: it's one of the biggest-selling rock records of the modern era, having moved more than 12 million copies in the California band's native U.S. and more than 32 freakin' million copies worldwide since it arrived in 2000.
Something about the album's mix of suburban angst, metal riffing and periodic rappin' and scratchin' struck a chord with mass audiences from the moment Hybrid Theory landed and has continued to strike that chord to this day. Chester Bennington's voice propelled "One Step Closer," "Papercut" and "Crawling" onto the rock-radio airwaves and into the hearts of tortured adolescents the world over, and Mike Shinoda's verses gave the whole thing its hip-hop backbone. Hybrid Theory refuses to go away.
