Rage Against the Machine's furious 1992 debut: "Killing in the Name," "Bombtrack," "Bullet in the Head" and "Freedom." Single LP on Legacy/Epic.
Rage's debut is one of the most explosive first albums ever, ranked among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. "Killing in the Name" remains the ultimate protest anthem, and the band went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
Nobody had heard anything quite like it in 1992. Zack de la Rocha's spat, shouted, revolutionary verses; Tom Morello's guitar coaxed into sounding like a turntable, a siren or a malfunctioning spaceship; Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk locking into grooves heavy enough to dent concrete. Rage Against the Machine fused hip hop, metal, punk and funk into something furious and new, and pointed it squarely at the powers that be.
The debut is lean and relentless: "Bombtrack" kicks the door in, "Bullet in the Head" and "Know Your Enemy" pile on, and "Killing in the Name" (with that famously unprintable finale) is still the song that makes any room go absolutely feral.
