About the album

After two years of playing Arise every night, Sepultura were bored of going fast. So they slowed down, tuned down to D and headed for Rockfield Studios in South Wales with Andy Wallace, chasing a heavier groove and a sound that drew on Brazil itself. It was also their first album as a four-piece with Paulo Jr. on bass.

"Refuse/Resist" opens with a heartbeat and Afro-Brazilian drumming before the riff lands like a wrecking ball, "Territory" stomps, and Andreas Kisser called "Nomad" the band's answer to Metallica's "Sad but True." "Kaiowas" went the other way: an acoustic piece recorded live among the ruins of Chepstow Castle. New Model Army's "The Hunt" made the album, and the bonus LP gathers the other covers from the sessions, "Policia," "Inhuman Nature" and "Crucificados Pelo Sistema," plus writing-session instrumentals and a blistering live set.

The record was nearly called Propaganda until Max Cavalera borrowed a twist on the Misfits' Earth A.D. The heartbeat at the start belongs to his then-unborn son Zyon, who therefore appeared on a metal landmark before he could walk. Most of us are still working on that.
