Sepultura's 1991 death/thrash landmark Arise in the Metal Matters series, featuring the original Scott Burns mix: "Arise," "Dead Embryonic Cells" and "Desperate Cry."
This Metal Matters edition carries the original Scott Burns mix, available outside Brazil for the first time since 1991. Arise sold a million copies worldwide by 1993 and was inducted into Decibel magazine's Hall of Fame.
Roadrunner gave Sepultura a $40,000 budget for Arise, which in 1990 thrash terms was roughly a king's ransom. The Brazilian band took it to Scott Burns's Morrisound studio in Florida, where Igor Cavalera and Burns spent a whole week just tuning and testing the drum kit. You can hear every dollar.
Max Cavalera and Andreas Kisser push the death/thrash attack of Beneath the Remains into new places, with hints of industrial, hardcore punk and Latin percussion. The title track is a storming opener, "Dead Embryonic Cells" is a thrash classic, "Desperate Cry" and "Subtraction" show the band's hardcore roots, and "Altered State" brings in the tribal drumming that would grow into Roots.
The tour ran 220 shows in 39 countries, and Whiplash called Arise widely considered the band's greatest album. Igor's week of drum tuning was, by the sound of it, time very well spent.
