About the album

Scissor Sisters came out of New York's nightlife, and their debut sounds like a very good night out. Jake Shears, Ana Matronic, Babydaddy, Del Marquis and Paddy Boom cooked up a bright mix of glam rock, disco, piano pop and electroclash, produced it themselves at 5D in Brooklyn and The Shed in New York, and found their biggest audience on the other side of the Atlantic.

"Laura" was the first single, a stomping, theatrical opener, and their falsetto disco take on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" turned heads everywhere. "Take Your Mama" is a rollicking, piano-pounding singalong, "Mary" is a heartfelt ballad, and "Filthy/Gorgeous" became their first No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs chart. "Lovers in the Backseat" and "Music Is the Victim" keep the glam guitars strutting, and "Return to Oz" closes the album on a moody, dreamlike note.

It went nine times platinum in the UK, made the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list, and Attitude magazine named it the top gay album of all time. Our Saturday staff would like it on record that they've been saying so for years.
