The Rolling Stones' 1994 album Voodoo Lounge as a half-speed mastered 2LP set on 180g vinyl, with "Love Is Strong," "You Got Me Rocking" and "Out of Tears."
Abbey Road cut this 2LP set at half speed from vinyl-specific transfers of the original tapes, on 180g vinyl in a gatefold. Voodoo Lounge won the Grammy for Best Rock Album and went to No. 1 in the UK.
Voodoo Lounge was a new chapter in a few ways. It was the Stones' first studio album after Bill Wyman left, with Darryl Jones joining on bass, and their first with Don Was in the producer's chair alongside the Glimmer Twins, the partnership that would carry them for decades.
Was steered them back toward the loose, rootsy sound of their late 1960s and early 1970s records. "Love Is Strong" opens with Mick Jagger's harmonica and a low, prowling vocal, "You Got Me Rocking" is a straight-ahead stage rouser, and "Sparks Will Fly" kicks hard. "Out of Tears" and "New Faces" show the softer side, and Keith Richards takes the lead on the country-tinged "The Worst" and the slow-burning "Thru and Thru," which later turned up on The Sopranos. Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood keep it all swinging, and Mean Disposition sits at the end of side four as a hidden bonus.
The Voodoo Lounge tour that followed was the highest-grossing tour ever at the time, pulling in about $320 million. That's a lot of tongue-logo T-shirts, and we suspect a few of them are still in circulation on our side of the counter.
