About the album

In March 1977, radio contest winners turned up at the El Mocambo on Spadina expecting to see April Wine, with an opening act billed as the Cockroaches, and the band were touring 1976's Black and Blue. The Cockroaches were the Rolling Stones. Toronto has been talking about it ever since, in a club that held about 300 people.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman, joined by Billy Preston on keys and Ollie Brown on percussion, tear through a set built for a sweaty room: "Honky Tonk Women," "All Down the Line," "Hand of Fate" and "Tumbling Dice," plus blues and rock 'n' roll covers including "Route 66," "Mannish Boy," "Crackin' Up," "Around and Around" and "Little Red Rooster." The bonus side brings "Melody," "Luxury" and an eight-minute "Worried About You" from the first night.

Four songs from these shows turned up on Love You Live in 1977; the rest waited 45 years. The El Mocambo is a short walk up Spadina from our Queen Street store, which is the nearest any of us got to the guest list.
