About the album

A film about computer code, lawsuits and a dorm-room website should not, by rights, sound this thrilling. David Fincher asked Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for something different, and the pair, then a few years into their partnership in Nine Inch Nails, answered with a score that hums, glitches and aches in equal measure.

"Hand Covers Bruise" sets the tone with a lonely piano line over a creeping drone, and its reprise brings it back to haunting effect. "In Motion" pulses like a night run across campus, "Intriguing Possibilities" and "Pieces Form The Whole" build tension out of tiny electronic details, and "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" turns Grieg into a gloriously overdriven rowing race. Fincher served as executive producer of the album, and this definitive edition gathers the score into a single 19-track sequence.

It changed how Hollywood thought about film music, and Reznor and Ross went on to score Gone Girl, Soul and Challengers. We'd recommend it for late-night studying, though it does tend to make an essay feel like a heist.
