About the album

Few film scores are as instantly recognizable from three notes of a trumpet. Nino Rota wrote the music for Francis Ford Coppola's first two Godfather films, his father Carmine Coppola added to it, and together they built a sound for the Corleones that is equal parts Sicilian village and American empire. Mandolins, mournful trumpet and sweeping strings carry the whole saga.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, a regular choice for film-score recordings, plays it across four sides. Side A opens with the Godfather Waltz, "Speak Softly Love" and the "Sicilian Pastorale," then the dance tunes from the opening wedding. Part II brings "The Immigrant" and "Kay" alongside Carmine Coppola's marches, and Part III closes things with the "Intermezzo" and "Preludio" from Pietro Mascagni's opera Cavalleria rusticana, which the Corleones are watching in the film's finale.

Rota and Carmine Coppola shared the Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score for Part II, so it's a family business in more ways than one. Put it on during Sunday dinner and see how long it takes someone to start doing the voice.
