Pink Floyd's 1968 second album A Saucerful of Secrets in its remastered mono mix on 180g vinyl, with "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and "Jugband Blues."
This edition presents the album in mono, remastered and pressed on 180g vinyl in the EU. A Saucerful of Secrets reached No. 9 in the UK, and it is the one Pink Floyd album where Syd Barrett and David Gilmour share the record.
Every band has a moment where the line-up changes in the middle of the job. Pink Floyd's came during this album: David Gilmour arrived as Syd Barrett drifted away, and the sessions at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road) with producer Norman Smith caught both of them, plus the start of the band that would go on to conquer the world.
"Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun," Roger Waters' slow, hypnotic space hymn, is the one song on which all five members appear. Richard Wright brings the gentle "Remember a Day" and "See-Saw," Waters opens with "Let There Be More Light," and Nick Mason's "Corporal Clegg" is a splendidly odd march. The long title piece is the blueprint for the long-form Floyd to come, and Barrett signs off with "Jugband Blues," for which Smith booked a Salvation Army brass band at Barrett's suggestion.
In 1968 mono was the mix the band and EMI cared about most, so this is the album the way most British fans first heard it. It took until April 2019 to reach the US chart, which proves good things come to those who wait, sometimes for 51 years.
