Pink Floyd's 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason, remixed and updated in 2019, as a 2LP set at 45 RPM: "Learning to Fly," "On the Turning Away" and "Sorrow."
This 2LP set carries the 2019 remix on 180g vinyl, half-speed mastered and cut at 45 RPM, with a gatefold, a 24-page booklet and an alternate cover photo from the original shoot. The album reached No. 3 in the UK and US.
Plenty of bands make records in barns or basements. David Gilmour made this one largely on Astoria, his converted houseboat on the Thames. It was the first Pink Floyd album after Roger Waters left, and it brought Richard Wright back into the fold.
Gilmour and co-producer Bob Ezrin built it from material that might have become a solo album. Keyboardist Jon Carin came up with the chords that became "Learning to Fly," Anthony Moore co-wrote it and "On the Turning Away," and "One Slip," "The Dogs of War" and the huge closer "Sorrow" fill out the big, widescreen sound. For the 2019 remix, Andy Jackson and Gilmour went back to the master tapes, restored more of Wright's keyboard parts (some unused the first time) and had Nick Mason re-record his drums, aiming for a more open, timeless mix, with the real instruments brought further forward.
The album outsold its predecessor and launched a world tour that ran from 1987 to 1989, including a free show on a barge on the Grand Canal in Venice. Floating, it seems, was a theme.
