About the album

Ten days, a tight budget and drummer Gary Young's home studio in Stockton, California: that's all it took for Pavement to make one of the defining records of nineties indie rock. Even the title was borrowed, from a cartoon by their friend David Berman, and the cover nicked its design from an old Ferrante & Teicher LP.

Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg's guitars are loose, fuzzy and endlessly tuneful. "Summer Babe (Winter Version)" kicks things off in a lovely haze, "Trigger Cut" is pure slacker joy, "In the Mouth a Desert" broods, and "Here" is one of the most quietly moving songs the band ever wrote.

It's the one Pavement album with Gary Young behind the kit, and it even became a rock opera in 2022.
