About the album

Bands usually rush out a third album while they're still hot. OneRepublic refused. In early 2012 they told fans the new record was due that autumn, then added that it had to be the best thing they'd ever done, and when it wasn't finished in time they simply waited until it was.

The patience paid off in hooks. "Counting Stars" pairs a stomping, folky guitar strum with a huge chorus, "Feel Again" and "If I Lose Myself" ride bright, pulsing electronics, and "Something I Need" became a big hit in Australia and New Zealand. "Love Runs Out" is all handclaps and swagger, "I Lived" is a big-hearted closer for any road trip, and "Au Revoir" and "Preacher" show off the band's quieter side. The artwork plays on how different each member is from the next, which suits a record that moves easily between pop, rock and dance.

"Love Runs Out" went top five in thirteen countries, and the singles kept coming for two years. The delay turned out to be a very sound policy, and one we'd quite like to see applied to more things, starting with our stock spreadsheet.
