About the album

The title is a pun with a point. Before this album, *NSYNC had parted ways with their manager and their label after a legal fight, and the puppet strings on the cover were their way of saying they were now pulling their own. They moved to Jive and set about proving they could make a pop record on their own terms.

They cast the net wide for help. "Bye Bye Bye" (produced by Kristian Lundin and Jake Schulze) is the snarling, string-jabbing opener everyone remembers, "It's Gonna Be Me" gave them a No. 1 on the Hot 100, and Richard Marx wrote the big ballad "This I Promise You." Teddy Riley, Babyface and She'kspere bring R&B swagger, while Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez step up as writers on tracks like "Digital Get Down."

The album has sold over 14 million copies worldwide and opened the door for boy bands to stretch beyond bubblegum. Fair warning, though; once "It's Gonna Be Me" is on, someone in the room will pronounce it the other way, and we take no responsibility for that.
