Why you'll love it

This 2LP set spreads Trent Reznor's soundtrack over four sides, pressed in the USA. It reached No. 19 on the Billboard 200 and went gold in Canada and the US, with new songs from Nine Inch Nails and Tha Dogg Pound.

About the album

Oliver Stone asked Trent Reznor to put together a soundtrack, and Reznor, being Reznor, built a collage instead. Working on a portable Pro Tools rig in hotel rooms during the Self Destruct Tour, he stitched songs, dialogue and sound effects into one continuous piece, aiming, as he put it, for "a cool souvenir" of the film.

The guest list is wonderfully unlikely. Leonard Cohen opens with "Waiting for the Miracle" and closes with "The Future," Toronto's Cowboy Junkies slow "Sweet Jane" to a crawl, and Patti Smith, L7, Duane Eddy, Patsy Cline and Jane's Addiction all pass through. Peter Gabriel and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan bring "Taboo," Juliette Lewis sings "Born Bad," Dr. Dre turns up, and Nine Inch Nails contribute the new "Burn" plus "Something I Can Never Have" and "A Warm Place." Tha Dogg Pound's "What Would U Do?" was written for the film.

Q's Andrew Collins summed it up neatly: "if you were a soundtrack album, you'd be Natural Born Killers." It is also, as far as we know, the sole record to put Patsy Cline and Lard within a few minutes of each other, and somehow it works.
