My Bloody Valentine's 1988 debut album Isn't Anything in a tip-on gatefold sleeve, the record that first put the shoegaze sound on tape.
This Domino reissue comes in a tip-on gatefold jacket with a printed inner sleeve and a download card. Isn't Anything topped the UK Independent Albums Chart and drew rave reviews, and it set out the blurred, woozy guitar sound that Loveless would take even further.
Most bands make their debut album well rested. My Bloody Valentine cut most of Isn't Anything in about two weeks at a studio in Wales, sleeping roughly two hours a night, and Bilinda Butcher remembered being woken at 7:30 in the morning to sing her parts. That half-dreaming haze is all over the record.
Kevin Shields had just signed the band to Creation and wanted to steer them back toward their noisier, stranger roots after the You Made Me Realise EP. Creation boss Alan McGee pushed for "more of the weirder stuff," and the band answered with "Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)," the bent, seasick swoon of "Lose My Breath" and the rush of "Feed Me with Your Kiss." Shields and Butcher trade gossamer vocals that sit inside the guitars rather than on top of them, and Colm Ó Cíosóig's drums keep the whole thing lurching forward.
Q's Stuart Maconie called it the first full-length expression of a remarkable new sound, and a generation of shoegaze, dream pop and noise pop bands took notes. We've yet to hear a better case for recording before breakfast.
