Modest Mouse's 1996 second EP Interstate 8, early songs from Isaac Brock, Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green, with "Edit The Sad Parts" and "Broke."
This Glacial Pace reissue comes on 180g vinyl with a square insert and a download card. Long sought after by collectors, it adds the band's original demo, Live in Sunburst Montana, to the studio cuts.
Every band has a garage period; Modest Mouse just had the good sense to tape theirs. The Live in Sunburst Montana demo, which fills the second side, came out of Isaac Brock's garage in Issaquah, Washington, long before most people outside the Pacific Northwest knew the name.
Brock sings and plays guitar, Eric Judy holds down the bass and Jeremiah Green drums, with Nicole Johnson adding vocals to "Interstate 8" and "Sleepwalking." "Tundra/Desert," "Novocain Stain" and "Beach Side Property" turned up again on the debut album This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, and "All Night Diner" later landed on the rarities set Building Nothing Out of Something.
Brock brought it back on his own label in 2015, and the restless, wide-eyed sound of the later records is already here. It's a fine argument for never throwing out the tapes in the garage, a principle we also apply to the stockroom, with mixed results.
