About the album

Modest Mouse spent a decade as one of indie rock's best-kept secrets, and then Isaac Brock wrote a song about everything turning out all right. With Dennis Herring producing, and Brock soaking up a stretch in the American South, the band made a record that Spin described as half burnished radio rock, half swampy Delta hoodoo.

"The World at Large" drifts in gently before "Float On" bounces out of the speakers, "Ocean Breathes Salty" is a big, warm singalong, and "Bukowski" and "Dance Hall" are full of Brock's wild-eyed energy. "Black Cadillacs" and "The Good Times Are Killing Me" close things out in true Modest Mouse style. Brock's lyrics swing from gallows humour to real tenderness, often in the same verse, and the bonus side reworks "Bury Me with It" with Jacknife Lee and "One Chance" with Herring himself.

The New York Times called it the best Modest Mouse album yet, and Q counted its running time as 45 bonkers minutes. Twenty years on, we can confirm that "Float On" still works on a Monday morning, which is more than can be said for most of us.
