About the album

The title comes from a fireworks show. Jake Ewald got up to blow his nose just before the finale, someone told him he was going to miss it all, and the band kept the line as a joke on him. That mix of small embarrassment and big feeling is the whole album in a nutshell.

Ewald and Bren Lukens wrote the songs while still at college in Philadelphia, where the band had formed at Drexel University, and this time Sean Huber on drums and Ian Farmer on bass were part of the band. "Your Graduation" is the shout-along centrepiece, "Rock Bottom" and "Fine, Great" are wry, wordy and catchy, and "Broken Cash Machine" and "Pothole" bring it home. Writers have tagged it everything from midwest emo to indie folk and power pop, which tells you how many directions it runs in.

Pitchfork noted how even-handed the songs are about romantic rejection, a rare thing in the emo world. Ten years on, the band shared demos of "Rock Bottom" and "Pothole" for the anniversary, and some of us are still finding our tissues.
