Modern Baseball's 2016 album Holy Ghost on black & blue vinyl, the Philadelphia band's sharpest set of emo and pop punk songs.
This black & blue pressing comes in a gatefold jacket with a printed inner sleeve. Holy Ghost splits neatly in two, Jake Ewald's songs on one side and Bren Lukens's on the other, with "Wedding Singer" and "Apple Cider, I Don't Mind" leading the way.
Two songwriters, one band, one record: Modern Baseball handled the potential traffic jam by giving each frontman his own side. Jake Ewald wrote the first six songs, mostly about the death of his grandfather, and Bren Lukens wrote the rest, about mental health and finding a way through. On the original vinyl the sides were even labelled J and B.
For the first time the band handed the controls to someone else, recording with Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Algernon Cadwallader) at Headroom Studios in Philadelphia. The result is tighter and bigger than anything they'd done before. "Everyday" and "Wedding Singer" are punchy and heartfelt, "Note to Self" hits hard in under two minutes, and "Apple Cider, I Don't Mind" and "Just Another Face" show Lukens at full, raw strength.
Holy Ghost arrived in May 2016 with an accompanying documentary, Tripping in the Dark. Letting someone else take the controls for the first time clearly agreed with them, which is more than most bands can say about handing over the car keys.
