American Football's 1999 midwest emo classic on 2LP: "Never Meant," "The Summer Ends," "Honestly?" and "Stay Home."
American Football's lone 90s album became one of the most influential emo records ever made, with its twinkly, interlocking guitars, trumpet and jazzy time signatures.
Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes and Steve Lamos made American Football in Urbana, Illinois, building songs from intricate, chiming guitar patterns, odd meters, gentle trumpet and Kinsella's soft, earnest vocals. The house on the cover has become an icon in its own right.
"Never Meant" is one of the defining emo songs, "The Summer Ends" glows with trumpet, "Honestly?" builds beautifully, and "Stay Home" is an expansive, hypnotic centrepiece.
