Maggie Rogers's 2022 second album Surrender, with "That's Where I Am," "Want Want" and "Horses," plus Florence Welch on "Shatter."
This Canadian-pressed LP comes in a deluxe gatefold with an illustrated lyric inner sleeve. Surrender reached No. 6 in the UK and No. 12 on the Billboard 200, and landed on year-end lists from Billboard, Rolling Stone and The A.V. Club.
Maggie Rogers said her second album would sound like "feral joy," and later named her tour after the phrase. She wrote and produced Surrender with Kid Harpoon, recording at Electric Lady in New York, Peter Gabriel's Real World in Wiltshire, Sid's Palace in Maine and, for good measure, her parents' garage.
"That's Where I Am" is a big, sunlit lead single with a chorus built for festival fields, "Want Want" is giddy and fuzzed-up (it later turned up in the trailer for XO, Kitty), and "Horses" is a slow-building, raw-voiced torch song. Florence Welch adds backing vocals and tambourine to the soaring "Shatter," Clairo and Claud chat their way through "I've Got a Friend," and "Overdrive" opens the album at full tilt. Elsewhere "Anywhere with You" races down the highway, "Begging for Rain" broods, and "Different Kind of World" closes things on a quiet, hopeful note. It's a record about letting go and feeling everything at full volume.
Critics heard indie pop, glam, Americana and new wave all rubbing shoulders, and Metacritic logged a score of 80. The garage has presumably been tidied since, though we wouldn't bet on it.
