About the album

Few careers have started in a classroom quite so publicly. Rogers was a music student at NYU when Pharrell Williams heard "Alaska" in a masterclass, and the clip of his reaction went everywhere. What followed was a whirlwind she later admitted left her overwhelmed, and Heard It in a Past Life is the sound of her taking it back on her own terms over two years of work.

She worked with heavyweight producers including Rostam Batmanglij and Greg Kurstin, and the album moves between folk-rooted songwriting and bright, beat-driven electro-pop. "Light On" is the big one, a candid thank-you note set to a soaring chorus that went to No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative chart. "Alaska" and "On + Off" carry over from her first EP, "Give a Little" bounces, and "Fallingwater" builds into something close to a hymn. "Back in My Body" closes the record on a hard-won, open-hearted high, and USA Today counted it among the year's best folk-pop albums.

Rolling Stone said it announced her as a major indie-pop force, and it has since passed 900 million streams on Spotify. Proof, if needed, that it's worth paying attention in class.
