About the album

Road-testing songs on tour is a time-honoured way of finding out what works, and Maggie Rogers was playing some of these to crowds on her 2023 Surrender dates before most people knew an album was coming. Back in New York she set up at Electric Lady Studios with Ian Fitchuk, co-producing the record herself and writing eight of the ten songs with him; the other two are hers alone.

Fitchuk covers bass, guitars, keys and drums across nearly every track, which gives the album the easy feel of a small band in a room. Sam Evian adds electric guitar, Shawn Everett mixed it and Emily Lazar mastered it. "It Was Coming All Along" opens with the windows down, "Drunk" and "The Kill" kick up some dust, and "I Still Do" and "Never Going Home" carry the album's quieter heart before the title track closes things out.

That title song came first, previewed on New Year's Day 2024, and Rogers described it as a rough journal entry about watching friends celebrate while she craved simpler things. It's a record about wanting the simple things in life, which, as luck would have it, includes a turntable.
