About the album

Picking 36 Madonna songs is less a tracklist than a negotiation; her manager Guy Oseary even asked fans on Twitter for suggestions. The result runs from "Burning Up" and "Lucky Star" in the early 1980s, right after she signed to the label, through to "4 Minutes" with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. Celebration: The Video Collection arrived alongside it on DVD.

In between come "Like a Virgin," "Into the Groove," "Material Girl," "Papa Don't Preach," "La Isla Bonita," "Express Yourself" and "Vogue," the late-90s reinvention of "Ray of Light" and "Frozen," and the disco glitter of "Music" and the ABBA-sampling "Hung Up." Paul Oakenfold co-produced the new title track, which became her 40th No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs chart. "Like a Prayer," "Open Your Heart," "Borderline" and "Take a Bow" fill out the middle sides.

In the US it debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. It also tied her with Elvis Presley for the most UK No. 1 albums by a solo artist. Eight sides is a fair bit of getting up off the sofa, which, given what's on them, you were going to do anyway.
