About the album

By 1989 Madonna had nothing left to prove on the dance floor, so she turned inward. Working again with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, she wrote about her Catholic upbringing, her family and her own life, and made the most introspective album of her career to that point, with rock and dance-pop folded into the mix.

The title track, with its gospel choir and rolling groove, is one of the great pop singles of the decade. "Express Yourself" and "Cherish" both reached No. 2, "Keep It Together" made the top ten, and Prince co-wrote, co-produced and duets on "Love Song." "Oh Father" and "Promise To Try" are among her most affecting ballads, and "Dear Jessie" is a sweet, psychedelic lullaby.

Critics praised its maturity and cohesion, and it went 4x platinum in the US. We've taken "Express Yourself" as house policy at the counter turntable, within reason.
