Madonna's 1983 debut, the dance-floor record that launched an icon: "Holiday," "Lucky Star," "Borderline" and "Everybody."
Madonna's debut gave the world "Holiday," "Lucky Star" and "Borderline," and the most famous pop career of the decade started right here.
Every superstar story has a beginning, and this one starts at Danceteria in New York, where DJ Mark Kamins played a demo of "Everybody" and then took the singer to Sire Records. Seymour Stein signed her for a few singles, and the club response was so strong that an album followed.
Working with producer Reggie Lucas and her friend Jellybean Benitez, Madonna made a sleek, synth-and-bass dance record. "Holiday" is pure joy, "Lucky Star" glitters, "Borderline" is a sweet, heartbreaking pop song, and "Burning Up" brings a little rock-edged attitude.
The album went multi-platinum and set her up for Like a Virgin and global superstardom. It still sounds like the best party in downtown New York.
