Liam Gallagher's MTV Unplugged, recorded at Hull City Hall in August 2019: acoustic takes on "Champagne Supernova," "Wall of Glass" and "Once."
This edition comes with a poster. The set topped the UK Albums Chart, the first live album to do so since 2014, and it was the UK's biggest selling vinyl album of 2020.
Liam Gallagher has spent most of his career at full volume, so turning it down for one night was always going to be an occasion. On August 3, 2019, at Hull City Hall, he swapped the roar of a full electric band for acoustic guitars and a gentler setting, following a long line of artists who have taken the MTV Unplugged stage. The ten songs here were picked from fifteen played on the night, split between Oasis favourites and his own solo records.
"Wall of Glass" opens with a rattle, and "Some Might Say" and "Cast No Shadow" sound newly tender stripped back. Solo songs "Once," "Now That I've Found You" and "One of Us" hold their own beside them, "Stand by Me" and "Sad Song" bring the singalong, and "Champagne Supernova" closes things in a slow, glorious swirl. The voice, rough edges and all, is front and centre throughout, and the stripped-back arrangements give the old Oasis songs plenty of room to breathe.
Its arrival moved from April to June 2020, and it went on to top the charts in Ireland and Scotland as well, with critics giving it a warm reception. Not bad for a night when the amplifiers got the evening off.
