About the album

Physical Graffiti is a double album because the new songs came out a little long. Led Zeppelin cut eight of them at Headley Grange, a country house in Hampshire, using Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio, and when the music ran to just under three sides, they filled out the set with seven unheard tracks from the Led Zeppelin III, IV and Houses of the Holy sessions. It was their first album on their own Swan Song label.

The range is enormous. "Kashmir" grew from an instrumental Jimmy Page and John Bonham sketched at Headley Grange, "In My Time Of Dying" stretches into a long slide-guitar blues, "Trampled Under Foot" rides John Paul Jones's clavinet, and "Ten Years Gone" and "Bron-Yr-Aur" show the band's gentler side. "Boogie With Stu" brings in the Rolling Stones' Ian Stewart on piano, and "Custard Pie" and "The Wanton Song" are pure riff.

Peter Corriston's die-cut cover, with its windows onto a New York tenement, proved so tricky to manufacture that it pushed the album into early 1975, and the band then celebrated with five nights at Earl's Court. Fifty years on, it's still the most complicated sleeve we've ever had to put a price sticker on.
