About the album

Mikaela Straus broke through in 2018 with "1950" and has been building her own little world as King Princess ever since. Girl Violence, her third album, is the most hands-on yet: she sings, plays a good chunk of the instruments and mixes and engineers alongside Jacob Portrait and Aire Atlantica.

"RIP KP" and "Cry Cry Cry" led the way as singles, and the album moves from the swaggering title track to the sweet ache of "Alone Again" and "Serena." "I Feel Pretty" and "Get Your Heart Broken" lean on big, crunchy guitars, Poppy Portrait adds vocals to "Origin," and IDLES singer Joe Talbot turns up on "Say What You Will." Dave Eggar's cello and orchestrations give several songs a cinematic lift, and Heba Kadry mastered the lot. Mellotron, Wurlitzer and slide guitar pop up throughout, so the record feels handmade even at its loudest, and it came out on section 1 in September 2025.

It's a confident, loud and tender record from an artist doing things her own way. She plays so much of it herself that soundcheck must be wonderfully quick.
