About the album

Before the fireworks, the candy-coloured stage sets and the stadium tours, Katy Perry was a songwriter with a point to prove. She'd made a gospel record under her real name, Katy Hudson, and had been working on these songs since she was 18. One of the Boys was her first album as Katy Perry, and it arrived fully formed, mixing pop rock guitars, big choruses and a cheeky sense of humour that became her trademark.

She worked with a who's who of pop producers, among them Dr. Luke, Butch Walker, Greg Wells, Benny Blanco and Dave Stewart. "I Kissed a Girl" became her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, "Hot n Cold" bounces on pure pop energy, "Thinking of You" strips things back to a heartfelt ballad, and "Waking Up in Vegas" gave her a third top ten hit.

She took the songs out on the Warped Tour and then on her first world tour, the Hello Katy Tour, and the album went multi-platinum in Canada and around the world. Fifteen years on, the hooks have held up rather better than most of our 2008 haircuts.
