About the album

After FutureSex/LoveSounds, Justin Timberlake stepped away from music for the best part of seven years to make films. When he came back, he wasn't in a hurry: most of the songs on The 20/20 Experience run past seven minutes, unfolding like old soul records with extended codas and lush string arrangements.

Timbaland and Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon produced it with Timberlake, steering toward R&B, neo soul and classic soul. "Pusher Love Girl" opens with a swooning string intro, "Suit & Tie" brings in Jay-Z and a strutting horn section, and "Mirrors" became a No. 1 in the UK and No. 2 in the US. "Strawberry Bubblegum" and "Spaceship Coupe" lean into dreamy slow jams, and "Let the Groove Get In" is a full-band workout with chanting backing vocals and a percussion breakdown.

It was conceived as the first half of a pair, with The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2 following that September. Timberlake promoted it on a stadium run with Jay-Z, and "Suit & Tie" also won a Grammy for its video, so the trousers were very much part of the plan.
