About the album

Seven years is a long gap for a pop star, and Justin Timberlake spent most of it acting. After the FutureSex/LoveShow tour wrapped in 2007, he made films and the odd guest appearance with Madonna, T.I. and Timbaland, until his manager Johnny Wright talked him into a return. When it came, it came in formal wear, long and lush R&B and neo soul built to be played start to finish.

Timbaland and Jerome Harmon produced alongside Timberlake, and the songs take their time. "Pusher Love Girl" opens with strings and a slow-burning groove that went on to win the Grammy for Best R&B Song, "Suit & Tie" brings Jay-Z along for a dapper strut, "Mirrors" is the big emotional centrepiece, and "Tunnel Vision" and "Spaceship Coupe" lean into Timbaland's skittering, futuristic beats. "Strawberry Bubblegum" and "Let the Groove Get In" keep the party going before "Blue Ocean Floor" closes in a dreamy haze.

He toured it in stadiums with Jay-Z on the Legends of the Summer tour, and by September a second volume had followed; the pair were later gathered as The Complete Experience. Most of us can't finish one album in seven years. He made two in six months, which frankly seems a bit much.
