Why you'll love it

This reissue keeps Get on the Good Foot as the gatefold 2LP set it first came out as in 1972. The album spent 17 weeks on Billboard's Top LP's chart and brings together The J.B.'s, Fred Wesley, Hank Ballard and a crack New York studio band.

About the album

Get on the Good Foot was James Brown's 34th studio album, which tells you something about the work rate of the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, and this sprawling double album caught him mid-stride. It's a big, generous grab bag: hard funk with The J.B.'s, lush ballads with orchestras, and a few old favourites dressed up in new clothes.

The title track, in Parts 1 & 2, is one of his great dance-floor commands, with Fred Wesley's trombone, Jabo Starks on drums and Jimmy Nolen's chicken-scratch guitar locked tight. "The Whole World Needs Liberation" reaches back to the original J.B.'s, with Bootsy and Catfish Collins in the grooves, and "My Part / Make It Funky (Parts 3 & 4)" stretches out the way he liked best. Hank Ballard turns up for a spoken recitation, and the studio sessions bring in a remarkable cast: Randy and Michael Brecker, Jon Faddis, Richard Tee and Bernard Purdie on new takes of "Cold Sweat," "Lost Someone" and "Please, Please."

Robert Christgau reckoned that if this were the world's sole James Brown album, it would be priceless. Thankfully there are dozens, and we have room for most of them, but this one gets you four sides of Brown at full throttle.
