About the album

Dave Bayley spent years writing songs about other people. Then drummer Joe Seaward was hit by a lorry while cycling in Dublin in 2018, and while his bandmate learned to walk and talk again, Bayley found himself looking back instead. The result is Dreamland, a memoir of a Texas childhood in the 90s and early 2000s, stitched together with clips from his mother's home videos.

Bayley wrote and produced almost all of it, with help from mentor Paul Epworth. The sound borrows from early-2000s R&B and hip hop: "Tokyo Drifting" with Denzel Curry bangs, "Your Love (Déjà Vu)" glides, and "Heat Waves" is the wistful, slow-motion heartbreak that took over the world. "Space Ghost Coast To Coast" and "It's All So Incredibly Loud" show how personal it gets, and the lyrics are full of Dunkaroos, GoldenEye and Pepsi Blue. The mix came from Bayley with David Wrench and Manny Marroquin.

Seaward recovered and played on the album. Dreamland: The Home Movies followed on VHS, naturally. His mum's camcorder, we'd suggest, has finally paid for itself.
