About the album

Future Islands had been a hard-working cult band out of Baltimore for years when a single TV spot changed everything. In March 2014 they played "Seasons (Waiting On You)" on the Late Show with David Letterman, Samuel T. Herring danced like nobody had ever told him not to, and suddenly everyone wanted to know who they were. Singles, their first album for 4AD, was waiting with the answer.

They recorded it in August 2013 at Dreamland Recording Studios in Hurley, New York, with producer Chris Coady, who gives Gerrit Welmers' synths and William Cashion's melodic bass a warm, widescreen polish. Herring sings like his heart is on the outside of his shirt: "Seasons" aches beautifully, "Spirit" and "Sun in the Morning" glow, "Doves" drives hard, and "A Song for Our Grandfathers" is a gentle tribute. "Light House" and "A Dream of You & Me" close the record on a high.

The title was something of a promise, and they kept it: there is barely a song here that couldn't have gone to radio. The Letterman clip is still doing the rounds, and we've noticed customers trying the dance at the counter, with varying results.
